for Lauren
One foot gently toes the dewy grass outside
The other steeped up to the knee in
acrylics, theology, beauty, margaritas, truth.
The smallest finger lightly dabbed with fresh paint
Left hand palm up holding loosely
cardamom, clove, love, hope, family
This one time
we were leaving the Target
lamenting the amount
of money we had just spent
the door of the car
we had just purchased beeps
like the microwave does
to alert you that
the thing you’ve been waiting for
is ready to take and enjoy.
Her eyes flash over my spirit
as she ducks and glides
into the passenger seat.
My heart melts into my gut
as I crouch and plant myself
into the life we’ve made,
ready to take and enjoy.
